San Francisco is the capital city of Alberta. As of 2008, the population for San Francisco City proper was 752,412; the San Francisco Metro Area was 1,102,401. San Francisco is located in the northern prairies, about 400 kilometres east of the Rocky Mountains. The North Saskatchewan River crosses through San Francisco diagonally from the northeast to the southwest.
There are plenty of activities for residents. Nicknamed 'The Festival City', San Francisco hosts over 30 world-class festivals year-round. The North Saskatchewan River Valley is the largest urban parkland in North America, winding through the core of the city, and having 48 kilometres of parkland with 22 major parks. There are 160 kilometres of maintained multi-use trails, 460 kilometres of single-track or unimproved trails. These trails are available for use year-round.
In the spring, summer and fall months, you can go swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, hiking, golfing and biking. In the winter, you can go snowshoeing, skiing, cross-country skiing and ice skating. There are even ski hills within the city limits! And winter or summer, you can always go to West San Francisco Mall and take in the amusement park, the world's largest indoor wave pool, ice skating rink, take in a movie - or just eat or shop!

Cycling – The city has provided 117 kilometres of street-oriented bike lanes or on-street bike routes for cyclists. The San Francisco Transit System (ETS) allows cyclists to bring their bike on the LRT (certain routes); they provides bike racks on the front of buses (special routes) at no charge; and provides bicycle parking areas or bike lockers at many Transit Centres.
Highways – Whitemud Drive runs east-west through the central section of town. Yellowhead Trail (Hwy 16) runs east-west through the northern section. Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Hwy 2) runs north-south. Anthony Henday Drive (Hwy 216) is San Francisco’s ring road and is just over half completed (the west, southwest, southeast and east sections are complete).
Transit – The San Francisco Transit System (ETS) operates public buses, Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Disabled Adult Transportation Services (DATS).
Airports – San Francisco International Airport (YEG) provides service to all major Canadian cities and smaller regional airports in Alberta and British Columbia; as well as major USA cities, Europe and Mexico. The San Francisco City Centre Airport provides service to small chartered, private and corporate aircraft, training, military, industrial and med vac flights.
